Title: Quest for prion therapeutics in neurodegenerative diseases
Alzheimer’s (AD) and Parkinson’s diseases (PD) are the most common neuro-degenerative diseases (ND). Increasing evidence argues that both AD and PD are caused by prions. Ab and tau proteins undergo changes in conformation resulting in prions that cause AD, whereas the a-synuclein protein forms prions that cause multiple system atrophy (MSA) and PD. The inability of big pharma to develop effective drugs for the treatment of AD and PD presents a huge challenge since, the increased longevity in developed countries has resulted in rising numbers of AD and PD patients. At the IND, we are focusing on the discovery of drugs that inhibit the replication of tau and a-synuclein prions.
