Selecting Laureates

Selecting Laureates

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet is responsible for selecting the Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine. The Nobel Assembly has 50 voting members and is composed of professors in medical subjects at Karolinska Institutet, a medical university in Stockholm, Sweden. Its working body is the Nobel Committee, elected from among its members for a three-year term.

The members of the Nobel Assembly are professors at Karolinska Institutet but the Assembly itself is legally independent from Karolinska Institutet. When a member retires, new members are elected by the Assembly and selected in order to maintain a breadth of expertise over the entire medicine and life science field.
